1080i / 720p broadcast HD debate revisited

looking disown at the 1080i vs. 720p debate, electronic house breaks down the broadcast formats we’re left with for our televised hd. with the major players locked down and millions of dollars of accoutrements already in put it’s basically a interruption of where the dust has settled (abc & fox on 720p, most others on 1080i.) these days our worries usually tend more towards overcompression and other maladies potentially affecting the signal than its native doggedness — at least until 1080p & 3d hit the mount.

Study Concludes That Climate Change Alone Could Erode US Improvements in Ground Level Ozone Events Resulting from Reduced Emissions

Global climate change by itself can significantly worsen the severity and frequency of high ground-level ozone (O3) events over most locations in the US, even with relatively small changes in average O3 air quality, according to a new modeling study by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University.

While changes in US anthropogenic emissions will play the most important role in attaining (or not) near-term US O3 air quality standards, high-O3 increases due to climate change alone can moderately erode an improvement in O3 made under a scenario of reduced US emissions, they concluded. A paper on the study by Pavan Racherla and Peter Adams was published online 30 December 2008 in the ACS journal Environmental Science & Technology.

A number of projects are trying to ascertain the impact of global change on future US air quality, with some differing results and recommendations.

While the net effect of future climate change alone is a decrease in the global tropospheric O3 due to increased absolute humidity, there could be ground-level O3 increases in some polluted regions due to increased NOx under warmer temperatures, increased biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions, and circulation changes. Non-US anthropogenic emissions affect US O3 concentrations by influencing the US O3 background which, for example, contributes an average 15-30 ppbv to afternoon O3 mixing ratios in surface air in the eastern US and 25-35 ppbv in the western US (based on model simulations for the summer of 1995). Thus, future increases in non-US anthropogenic emissions, especially CH4 and nitrogen oxides (NOx), could increase US O3 concentrations.

…some studies find that anthropogenic emissions changes (US and worldwide) will influence future US O3 air quality the most, others find that climate change will play an equally?if not more?influential role; others point to reductions in CH4 emissions as a cost-effective method of achieving both global (and US) O3 air quality and climate objectives. Thus, there is a need for analyses that consider the multitude of factors influencing future US air quality under a common framework.

?racherla and adams

Racherla and Adams Racherla and Adams focused on the combined effects of changes in climate and anthropogenic emissions worldwide. They did not perform a detailed scenario analysis of the O3 effects of CH4 and non-US emissions, but focused instead on quantifying their role in a high-emissions scenario.

The team used the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on Emissions Scenarios (SRES) A2 and B1 scenarios, which have overall higher and lower O3-precursor emissions for the US, respectively, to examine the sensitivity of US O3 to regional emissions increases (decreases). The A2 climate scenario lies at the upper extreme of projected climate change for the 21st century.

Houma la

They ran total of eight model simulations using the two scenarios with a “unified” model of global climate, gas-phase chemistry, and aerosols including sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, black carbon, primary and secondary organic aerosol, mineral dust, and sea salt.

Racherla and Adams suggested three policy implications of their findings:

WHAT, YOU EXPECTED EPU’S FIRST FRONT-PAGER TO HAVE SOME OTHER TITLE?

A funny thing happened on the way to the New Year’s Eve party….

As some of you know by now, this Wednesday the RedState Directors promoted me to join the team as a front-page contributor. It goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway: I am deeply honored, thankful, humbled, and a bit stunned. I will not deny, I sure had ambitions and hopes toward this, in the same way I once wanted to be a major league pitcher. I mean, who would not wish to be a RedState contributor? But who knew? Lil’ ole me, the OCD guy who won’t let the Fred thing go.RedState is not the corner malt-shop, some nickel and dime agitprop echo chamber. RedState is the biggest mover and shaker in the right-blog universe, and the Directors and Contributors here are one high-profile, professional bunch of political thinkers and operators. It is no exaggeration to say that things said and done on RedState affect votes and debates in Congress.

As I told Jaded last night, I now walk where Augustine, Thomas Crown, and Krempasky have trod. I now rub shoulders with other giants, of equal stature to those. While I have my posse, the Fredheads — and a fine bunch it is, I LOVE you people — THESE people influence things on Capitol Hill. They are big-time connected in the Republican Party, and in the conservative movement. They are hated and feared by the left. They force the Treason Media to deal with RedState. And the trend is accelerating.

It is incumbent on me now to walk in the way of these people, to not only honor their legacy but to continue their work — to increase the influence and excellence of RedState. The old guard got us here - we are currently the most-read, by far, right-side blog on Capitol Hill. Under the new guard, before we lay our swords down, we shall be required morning reading by every staff in Washington and in state houses, of either party, in every bureaucracy. Democrats will read us and fear. So will Republicans, of the wuss, compromising, and RINO variants. Ditto career kleptocrats bureaucrats. What the RedState community lays its hands on will be moved. And that movement will be toward the small-government, liberty-loving, America-is-great vision of Edmund Burke and the Founding Fathers.

So anyway, I am here. You are here. And it’s time to serve notice.

Game on, be-yotch.

Stiffed Warner Bros. Sues CBS Over ‘Two and a Half Men’ [Lawsuits]

throwing a litigious lump of coal in its friend’s stocking, warner bros. tv leveled a rift-of-contract lawsuit against cbs seeking $49 million in unsettled license fees and development costs for two and a half men.

Never mind that the parties co-own a network together and have managed a smooth, lucrative relationship since well before Men became a hit six years ago — what’s due is due, per a suit filed Tuesday in LA Superior Court:

The suit … alleges that as part of CBS’ renegotiated license agreement to air Men for a fifth and sixth season, it agreed to pay WBTV a premium above the initial license fee schedule and reimburse the studio for costs associated with the production of TV’s top-rated comedy. This “deficit recoupment,” as the term is commonly known, required CBS to pony up if the show reached specific ratings milestones in its fourth season.

“CBS has reaped the benefits of the tremendous success of Two and a Half Men but wants to deny Warner Bros. the right to its agreed-upon share,” the complaint argues.

True, Men did enjoy its current season’s highest ratings last week, and true, Charlie Sheen’s lavish $800,000-per-episode salary doesn’t pay itself. But buried in the THR report is the more glaring reality that WBTV won’t any time soon see a cent of the $23 million that the bankrupt Tribune Company owes it for syndicating Men and Friends, leaving Warners’ the unusual but necessary option of Les Moonves unwrapping different kind of briefs than he’s used to this season. And if you’re going to accept responsibility for Men, you might as well get your money’s worth. You can’t really blame the guys.
